An impact deformation behavior around the interface between materials having different elastic wave velocities is observed using mesh based digital image correlation method. A bi-material which is made of PMMA resin and polyurethane resin is used for the specimen. A random pattern is painted on the observation surface of the specimen for tracking the surface displacements. The impact load is applied to the specimen using a split Hopkinson pressure bar method. Images of the stress wave propagation parallel to the interface are recorded by the high-speed camera having the frame rate of 1 million frames/s. Displacement and strain distributions are obtained by mesh based digital image correlation using the finite element mesh that boundaries of the elements are set along the interface of the bi-material. As a result, strain components of the deformation field around the interface are obtained.
