In our previous study the method adding pre-loading stress before cyclic loading were suggested to improve the degradation in cyclic fatigue life-time of partially stabilized zirconia. The test results indicated that the method could make the lifetime appreciably increase in cycling fatigue with a low applied stress. However, it is necessary to know whether there would be an optimum pre-loading stress to strengthen the transformation zone. From the view point, in this study the cyclic fatigue lifetimes under various pre-loading stresses and pre-loading methods were examined. Experiments and SEM observations showed that there is the optimum pre-loading stress which produces a pertinent coexistence of micro-cracks and transformed particles within transformation zone.
