In order to realize a mechanical metamaterial that disperses strain concentrations caused by compression of a cylinder, two-dimensional finite element analyses were carried out on three models with different structures. All analytical models had small spaces and were designed to exhibit the same deformation stiffness. A model with uniform spaces showed high values of strain energy in the vicinity of the contact area with cylinder. On the other hand, a model consisting of long and short spaces arranged alternately showed lower strain energies in the region near the contact area. Furthermore, a model consisting of asymmetrical arrays of long spaces successfully dispersed the strain energy to the far side.
