This study aims to investigate the influence on the basic cutting performances when changed the tool geometries in high speed end milling and to develop the new end mill for the high speed and high efficient machining. The hardened steel (SKD11 (HRC60)) and (Ti, Al) N coated carbide square end mill were used in this experiment, and tool wear, finished surface roughness, chip shape and cutting force were researched by side cutting under the dry cutting conditioa. From the obtained results, under the cutting speed of 565 m/min and the feed rate of 0.05 mm/tooth, the end mill of high helix angle and large negative radial rake angle showed the good cutting performance. The occurrence of chatter was not observed under the any tool geometries.
