Freeform surface is widely used in CAD and other engineering applications to describe the surface of 3D objects. Generally multi-axis machine tools are used for the manufacturing of those products with complex shapes. In this research, the main aim is to analyze the characteristics of the freeform surface, and to extract the feature areas of the freeform surface. These feature information may be used in CAM programming, to generate more efficient tool paths, and to improve the efficiency for freeform surface machining. In mesh simplification researches, one of the main goals is to find out the feature elements, and to keep these features with the models is being simplified. In this paper, feature line segments detection and Gaussian curvature analysis of freeform surface are presented, and the discussions about the experimental results are addressed.
