For machining 3D cavities in hard materials, ED-milling with a simple-shape electrode is an attractive method. However, the electrode wear prevents accurate machining. We proposed WED-milling, an ED-milling using a wire electrode fed along the groove in a hemisphere head of a column type wire guide. By this method, 3D machining similar to the mechanical milling with a ball end mill is realized. In this paper, we describe the performance of WED-milling comparing with traditional EDM.
