Drilling is one of the most frequent and important process in machine shop, so the improvements in drilling performance such as shorter machining time, higher quality in machined hole and longer tool life has great importance. In this study, deep hole drilling over L/D10 with center through lubricant mist carried by mixed gas was investigated. By removing oxygen from carrier gas for mist lubrication, not only temperature deterioration in cutting point but also lower friction force between tool and work material were achieved. XPS analysis on machined surface using mixed gas driven lubricant mist shows the existence of iron carbonate, the formation of this compound onto chip surface reduces the n・iction between tool and chip during drilling operation.
