Driving behavior is evaluated by driving simulators and actual vehicle tests. Driving simulators have many advantages over actual vehicle tests. For example, driving simulators have a repeatability of driving conditions and are easy to keep safe of the driver in a dangerous driving situation. In late years, the interest about dynamic driving simulators is increasing in the automotive field because dynamic driving simulators play an important role in the development of advanced driver assistance and accident avoidance system. Dynamic driving simulators are controlled by motion cueing algorithm. Motion cueing is a strategy to give the driver the most realistic perception within limited working space using the acceleration of motion device. In this study, the small driving simulator with a motion device which causes lateral acceleration by moving driver seat was developed. In order to evaluate dynamic characteristics of developed motion device, sweep test under the condition of constant acceleration was conducted. The developed motion device provides a driver with only transient acceleration because it is considered that humans are sensitive to feel transient acceleration. Transient acceleration in high frequency range is calculated by passing into lateral acceleration to high pass filter. This transient acceleration was used to an input signal for the developed motion device. Single lane change test was conducted to determine time constant of high pass filter through a trial and error process. Moreover, developed motion device was applied motion cueing strategy, the acceleration generated by the developed motion device was compared with the calculated transient acceleration.
