In this study, we investigated the properties of noise and vibration of plastic gear for power transmission. On the basis of experimental results, we discussed about the noise generation mechanism. It becomes clear as follows. (1) A plastic gear engaged with a steel gear is excited vibration heavily and the noise is radiated loudly from the plastic gear side rather than the mating steel gear side. (2) The vibration is caused by the the large tooth deflection of plastic gear in mesh cycle. (3) It is considered that one of the practical ways to reduce the noise of plastic gear is to reduce transmission error by appropriate profile modification.
