Thermal fatigue cracking may initiate at a tee pipe where high and low temperature fluids flow in from different directions and mix. Thermal stress fluctuations are caused by movement of a hot spot on the pipe inner surface. It is important to investigate the heat transfer from the fluid to the structure around the hot spot. The heat transfer characteristic in the mixing tee pipe was investigated by tests in this study. The unsteady heat transfer coefficients around the hot spot were estimated with the fluid and wall temperature, which were measured with thermocouples. The estimated heat transfer coefficient varied from 1.2 to 3.5 times of the steady state heat transfer coefficient. The heat transfer coefficient was 2.9 times of the steady state value at the position for the maximum stress fluctuation, which was calculated with the measured wall temperature distribution.
