The vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB) is expected as a large capacity battery for leveling the power variation of renewable energy. To improve VRFB’s performance, the authors experimentally investigated the discharge performance and current density distribution in electrolyte flow direction under various conditions, and constructed analysis models based on the experimental results. To evaluate the dominant factors and the effects on the cell performance comprehensively, this study tries to develop simple equations which can calculate the effects of various factors on the performance and the current density distribution. The results calculated by the developed equations were compared with the model analysis results. It was shown that the simple equation for the cell performance and the current density distribution in the flow direction can simulate the results evaluated by analysis model well in the low current density region. The simple equation to consider the effects of the potential distributions in the thickness direction of the electrode can also simulated the results by the model analysis at the lower current densities.
