A design method of critical position controllers for two-mass servo systems subject to magnitude- and rate-limited reference inputs is presented. The low-order controller synthesis using coprime factors and linear matrix inequalities (LMIs) is utilized. The optimal coprime factors of the plant and controller in terms of tracking performance are searched by genetic algorithms (GAs). The proposed design is tested on a laboratoy test bed to verify its effectiveness.
