Abstract
Today several types of tactile display have been developed. Some of them uses physical information of environment such as shape or reaction force for general purpose. Others uses special characteristics of cutaneous sensation. Althhough the specialized cutaneous sensation and generalized tactile device are difficult to be compatible. Here we propose novel type of tactile display which uses dilatancy phenomenon. Colloidal solution with water-insoluble microparticle and water shows a dilatancy. This fluid changes its phase from fluid to solid when the exponential deformation is given. By using this phase shift phenomenon, we design a tactile display which can control its hardness by the control of vibration. With this device the generalization and cutaneous sensation may be compatible.
