Abstract
Here we report a novel fabrication method realizing the production of biodegradable porous microspheres in uniform size and shape for biomedical applications. A modified process named phase separation assisted electrospray was employed in order to continuously fabricate the polymeric microspheres. Features such as diameter and porosity were found to be tunable by adjusting process conditions. By combining an electrostatic lens we have also enabled both the production and patterning of the spheres simultaneously and the resolution was up to 500 μm. To confirm biocompatibility and cell proliferation, human hepatocyte cells were cultured on the patterned polylactic acid microspheres.
