Abstract
Bone is often subjected to residual stresses and the stresses play an important role in a mechanical strength of the tissue. The aim of this study is to compare the residual stresses at the cortical surface of the diaphysis in bovine and equine femurs. The residual stresses were measured at anterior, posterior, lateral, and medial positions in the middle of the femurs. As a result, focusing on the anterior and posterior positions, the residual stresses of the anterior position were larger than that of the posterior position in both femurs. It would appear that the femurs from different quadrupeds are subjected to similar bending loads for the anterior-posterior direction in vivo. Therefore, the residual stresses should relate to the mechanical environments in vivo.
