Abstract
Micro dialysis systems are expected to drastically improve quality of life (QOL) of the patients who have to undergo dialysis treatment several times a week. Our group has been developing microfluidic systems containing polyethersulfone (PES) nano-porous membranes that allow only low molecular weight ions to pass through and block large molecules, such as proteins. PES membranes can selectively separate the solute, but in the long term, the surface of membranes might be clogged by proteins. Therefore we tried to modify the surface of them depositing parylene on membranes in the method of POLD. In this paper, we reported the results of dialysis experiments using NaCl solution and cattle blood. We found that the electrolytes permeated through PES membranes while blood cells and proteins did not. We also investigated contact angles of pure water onto our membranes and found that they changed according to the thickness of parylene on PES membranes.
