This paper proposes a navigation method with Indoor MEssaging System (IMES) for the service robot which moves indoors. IMES is expected to be promising indoor positioning systems. IMES is the technology developed for the applications of Personal Digital Assistants, such as a cellular phone, a smartphone and a tablet. IMES consists of the transmitters which transmit position information by GPS compatible signal and GPS receivers. The contents of the message are latitude, longitude, altitude and floor number. The existing GPS receivers can receive IMES signals by changing of their firmware. The purpose of this research is development of the component technology for applying IMES technology to mobile robots. In this report, the experimental results of the signal propagation basic characteristic (directivity and receiving intensity) of IMES, the development of IMES Guided mobile Robot (IGR) and the indoor navigation experimental results are described.
