Abstract
This paper presents ethologically inspired human-robot communication for a monitoring support system in Intelligent Space. We apply the iSpace observation function to a monitoring system of elderlies' safety with the purpose of home care support. And, a mobile robot is introduced as a physical agent in iSpace, which has an ethologically inspired behavioral model to realize social communication with humans. The behavioral model has been built based on an original ethological test setting. Therefore, some parts of the model are not appropriate to a monitoring support system. To solve the problems, we modify the robot behavior model as required to comply with the monitoring support system in iSpace. To evaluate social behavior of the robot, we conduct an experiment to investigate whether subjects understand human-robot relationships from robot's behaviors through simulation.
