There is a growing need for designing high-value-added products by taking account of ergonomics. However, conventional ergonomic design of products based on mock-up and sensory evaluation is costly, time-consuming and subjective. As an alternative, digital human technology, i.e., evaluation of mechanical interaction between human body and a product in a virtual space using a digital human model, has received considerable attention in recent years. In the present study, we developed an anatomically-based musculoskeletal model of the human hand for estimation of internal mechanical load during power grip tasks. Contact forces and muscle forces of a human hand grasping an object were successfully estimated by solving an optimization problem under given geometrical conditions between the hand and the object.
