As a part of developing the rehabilitation system for brain stroke patients to aid moving their legs, we simultaneously measure electroencephalography (EEG) in the brain and electromyography (EMG) during the ankle movement. In voluntary moving the right Tiberius anterior muscle, we found synchronized EEG components as well as desynchronized ones in association with delayed electromyographic activities of the muscle movement. The synchronized (ERS) and desynchronized (ERD) envelope was frequency specific, strongest at the Beta band (13-20Hz) and high Gamma band (55-62Hz) at the channel C3, near to the left primary motor cortex. Since ERD turned into ERS after 200 to 300 ms from the triggering signals, the result suggests that the ERD/ERS envelope pattern serves as a kind of motor command to initiate human body movement. Such parameters should be critical for the communication system of the brain-machine interface towards rehabilitation.
