Recently, the use of a bio-inspired oscillating elastic fin has been proposed as an alternative aquatic propulsion mechanism. However, the optimum elasticity of the fin is not constant and changes based on oscillation speed. We have developed a fiber composite viscoelastic fin filled with dilatant fluid to maintain the optimum rigidity with respect to its changing oscillation speed. We discussed the behavior of the fin and the propulsion characteristics in a stationary water.
