Abstract

A box-shaped soft mechanism that can wrap an object by removing the air inside was developed. Cubic sponges with rigid sheets fixed to both ends of the side were arranged in a lattice and enclosed in an airtight bag. When the air inside is evacuated, the structure shrinks horizontally while maintaining its height. The wrapping mechanism that combines the shrinking mechanisms into a box can wrap objects of various sizes and shapes to protect them. This mechanism can reduce the labor required for manual object wrapping. The shrinking mechanism that changes the size in two dimensions can also be used as a novel pneumatic actuator for soft robots.
