Abstract

Recently, the average life span of Japanese has been increasing, and it is important for the elderly to maintain their dental and oral health to improve their quality of life. The most serious problems of oral health are dental caries and periodontal disease, which not only lead to a decline in QOL due to tooth extractions but also cause systemic diseases such as myocardial infarction, cerebral infarction, and diabetes mellitus as symptoms become severe. The cause of the periodontal disease is plaque that is left behind when brushing the teeth. We have been developing a toothbrushing evaluation system to assess whether toothbrushing is done correctly so that plaque is not left behind. In this study, we report on the validation of plaque removal using our toothbrushing evaluation system and dental models.
