Abstract

In this paper, we propose a method for chest movement measurement during respiration and swallowing using a millimeter wave radar sensor. The measurement can assist monitoring the ability related to breath and swallowing function of the older adult naturally. The chest movement was measured as the slight distance changes between the radar sensor and the chest using the amplitude and phase data of the reflected wave. Eleven healthy male participants’ chest movement in breathing and swallowing on a chair were measured using the radar sensor and a reference band-type sensor. As a result, a high correlation more than 0.7 on average was found between the data of the millimeter wave radar and the reference band-type sensor. Measured chest movement in the experiment demonstrated that our measurement method could identify characteristical movement according to swallowing.
