Abstract

Multiple functions of forests, such as landslide prevention, is quite important, and the cultivation of understory vegetation is considered necessary to preserve these functions. In forestry, light-receiving felling is used to create a light environment suitable for the growth of forest vegetation. The selection of trees to be harvested, however, is currently left to the discretion of on-site workers. It is serious problem that forests could be lost due to misjudgment, and loss of forest functions results in disasters. Therefore, systems that can quantitatively evaluate changes, in advance, the light environment in the forest due to logging is demanded. In this study, we propose a tree selection method with a tree-model-based shade simulation for appropriate light-receiving felling. In experiment, we compared a result of simulated tree selection by the proposed method and a result of actual tree selection by an on-site professional worker.
