Reaching task has been often used to assess the human upper limb movements and their motor learning in physical therapy. In the conventional studies, the upper limb movements have been measured using an input device, such as joystick and manipulandum, and reaching time and changes in the trajectory are analyzed quantitatively. These conventional methods are indeed useful, however still have some rooms to be improved for the precise assessment; for instance, the joystick is leaned in depth direction but the pointer on a monitor which links with the manipulation of joystick moves in vertical direction. In the present study, a novel VR motor learning system using the embodiment of virtual hands was developed to enable further study on the underlying mechanism of upper limb motor learning. Additionally, we investigated the impact of a visual flame effect, which is supposed to induce the sense of avoidance, on the reaching performance.
