In recent years, microfluidic devices have attracted attention as a tool for single-cell analysis. Among the components of microfluidic devices, valves are important for fluid control within the devices. In our laboratory, we use thermoresponsive hydrogel as microvalves that can be actuated by using a light irradiation. By using light irradiation, we can drive them independently and integrate large number of microvalves without complex wirings. This integrated microvalve can be used to apply stimuli, such as drag or cytokines to single cells. However, there is a possibility of reagents permeating through gel valves. Therefore, in this study, we evaluate the permeability of some molecules to gel valves for design of gel valves that are suitable for single cell analysis.
