Owing to utilization of highly advanced earth-observation sensors and superconducting devices on communication satellites, space-borne cryocoolers have been increasingly used in many space missions for recent years. Therefore, it is necessary to carry out fundamental researches for development of space-borne cryocoolers with compact-lightweight, high performance, high reliability, and long service life. New cooling systems of thermoacoustic devices have gotten a lot of attention recently. We suggest a thermoacoustic engine as a pressure wave source for a pulse tube refrigerator, which is expectedly used for thermally-driven cooling system in orbit without electricity. Although the existing thermal compressor needs a long resonance tube, the proposed cooling system is equipped with solid displacers instead of bulky and massive tube. In this study, thermoacoustic prime mover of solid-displacer type is experimentally investigated.
