This paper clarifies the microorganism distribution in Refuse Derived Fuel (hereafter RDF) in order to elucidate the explosion mechanism occurred at Mie prefecture in 2003. Metagenomics analyzes all the DNA of bacteria in RDF, bypassing the need to isolate and culture individual microbial species. Bacterial communities in two kinds of RDF, Kuwana and Sakura are revealed for non-culture and 3-day culture conditions. Hydrogen producing bacteria such as Bacillus sp. and Clostridium sp. were found in both samples. Initially, 30% of the entire community are hydrogen-producing bacteria and increased to 60% in 3-day period.
