Although studies have been conducted on the use of particle dampers to solve various vibration problems, few studies have been conducted on frictional self-excited vibration. In addition, few studies have investigated the vibration characteristics of cast iron powders with very small grain sizes and irregular shapes. Therefore, we investigate the effect of particle damper on squeal of automobile disc brakes, which generates frictional self-excited vibration and causes noise problems. In this study, we experimentally investigated the difference in the effect on squeal when granular materials were added to the disc rotor. Cast iron powder and stainless-steel balls were used as the granular materials. First, changes in the natural frequency and damping ratio of the disc rotor were investigated by performing hammering tests. It was found that the damping ratio increased for both cast iron powder and stainless-steel balls. Subsequent braking tests showed that the squeal was suppressed. The stainless-steel balls were expected to have a greater suppressive effect than the cast iron powder. The particle damper was found to be effective against brake squeal, which is one of the frictional self-excited vibration phenomena.
