Elevators and escalators are indispensable equipment that are considered one of the important infrastructure for vertical transportation in buildings, stations and so on. More than 100 years have passed since modern elevators and escalators were introduced, and they are still being developed with unique features according to the country or region. On the other hand, because they are familiar equipment to the ordinary citizens, various accidents have occurred so far. Therefore, this paper focuses on two European countries, the United Kingdom and Italy, and reports the elevator and escalator technologies and their accidents in each country. Regarding in the United Kingdom, elevators and escalators in the London subway system is introduced. A major fire in a subway station which was caused by a fire on a wooden step of an escalator occuered in 1987. Regarding in Italy, elevators and escalators are introduced from the viewpoint of the characteristics caused by the Italian land, and the escalator accident in a subway station in Rome in 2018 is introduced.
