Impact tensile characteristics of sheet steels for automobile structural use are determined using a tensile split Hopkinson bar. Two different sheet steels (ultra-low carbon steel and high tensile steel) with 1mm thickness are tested. Small sheet tension specimens are machined from steel sheets of 330x330mm^2. Tensile stress-strain curves for the sheet steels at strain rates of nearly 1200/s are presented and compared with those at low and medium rates of strain obtained in an Instron testing machine. The effects of strain rate and extrusion direction on the tensile characteristics are examined. It is shown that ultra-low carbon steel exhibits higher strain-rate sensitivity than high tensile steel.
