Previously we showed that the sialyl 6-sulfo Lex determinant, the L-selectin ligand on high endothelial venules in lymph nodes, is also expressed in human colonic tissues. The sialyl 6-sulfo Lex determinant was preferentially expressed in non-malignant colonic epithelia than in cancer cells. We next investigated the amount of mRNA for 6-sulfotransferases (6ST) isoenzymes in human colorectal cancer tissues. The most remarkable finding was that the message of HEC-GlcNAc6ST was prominently increased in cancer tissues compared to nonmalignant mucosa. On the other hand, I-GlcNAc6ST mRNA expression was significantry higher in non-malignant mucosa rather than in cancer tissues.
