Maintenance of cognitive function and mental well-being is an important social challenge. Arachidonic acid (ARA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), major lipid components of the brain, decline with aging; however, the causes of this decline, and the significance of their continued intake remain unclear. We have established a technology for production of ARA and have been conducting research on long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LCPUFA), including DHA and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). Through observational and interventional studies, we have clarified their contribution to cognitive function and mental health. Furthermore, studies using iPS cells and other cell models have helped to clarify their mechanisms of function. On the basis of these findings, “Omega A.D.E PLUSTM” (Suntory Wellness Ltd., Minato-ku, Tokyo, Japan) was launched in 2024 to promote social implementation. Future efforts will focus on multifactorial interventions combining LCPUFA intake with exercise and cognitive activities, as well as further social implementation, aiming at sustained brain health.
