The concept of autoimmune encephalitis (AE) has recently been established based on the discoveries of antibodies that attack neuronal or glial proteins. The AE could refer to autoinflammatory processes of the CNS caused by (i) antibodies to intracellular neuronal/glial proteins (group I antibodies) and (ii) antibodies to neuronal/glial cell–surface or synaptic proteins (group II antibodies). This overview comprises basic AE knowledge, including epidemiology, recently discovered antibodies and clinical practice guidelines. We would identify gaps in knowledge and provide suggestions for establishing standard diagnoses and treatments in Japan and worldwide.
