This research proposes that the exhortations in Ephesians 5:18–20 form a compound allusion to Old Testament texts to recommend practical conduct associated with the epistle’s ecclesiology of the church as the family of God and temple of the divine Spirit. First, the prohibition of drunkenness alludes to the wider context of LXX Proverbs 23:31 with its instruction for a wise son to explain the manner of “walking” in wisdom as the beloved children of God who are part of God’s family. Second, the three exhortations together express an ecclesiology of the church as a temple of the divine Spirit through prohibiting drunkenness (Lev 10:9), language of “filling”, and the activities of singing and giving thanks, activities particularly associated with the tabernacle/temple worship.
