Cinnamon bark is a crude drug component that plays an important role in Kampo medicine. In addition to the established therapeutic effects of Cinnamon bark powder formulation that have led to its commercialization as a general medicinal product, Cinnamon bark has also attracted attention as a crude drug. Therefore, in addition to the official Japanese Pharmacopoeia reference standards, the development of a quality evaluation method, using quantification of its components, is required. Previously, we established an HPLC method for the simultaneous quantification of three components. In this study, we describe a four-component (coumarin, (E)-cinnamic acid, (E)-cinnamaldehyde, (E)-2-methoxy- cinnamaldehyde) simultaneous quantification method using ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography (UHPLC), in order to reduce the analysis time and improve the usability of the method. Moreover, though (E)-2-methoxy cinnamaldehyde is not a standard constituent of all Cinnamon bark species, we confirmed its concentration in commercially available products and examined the stability of this component.
