This special issue, Generative AI and Knowledge Engineering, explores the fundamental questions of what knowledge is and how humans and AI can co-create knowledge in the era of generative artificial intelligence. The contributions go beyond applications of large language models and examine implicit knowledge, situated expertise, co-creation, explainability, embodiment, and social contexts from the perspectives of knowledge science and knowledge engineering. While generative AI has democratized access to knowledge generation and enabled anyone to engage in intellectual activities, it primarily relies on digitized and explicit knowledge. The papers highlight the importance of integrating implicit and practice-based knowledge embedded in laboratories, manufacturing sites, healthcare, and service environments. They also emphasize human–AI co-evolution, where AI functions not merely as a tool for efficiency but as a partner in thinking and knowledge creation. Looking beyond intelligence, this special issue introduces the concept of Human-Wisdom, advocating the development of capabilities to contextualize, share, and responsibly apply knowledge for societal value and future-oriented innovation.
