The compressive behavior of high-strength bolted friction connections with layered connection plates on gusset plates was investigated through experiments and numerical analysis. In steel bridge joints, two configurations exist: one where the gusset plate is integrated with the web, and another where it is externally attached. The target bridge adopts the latter with additional plates layered onto the gusset plate—a rarely studied form. Scaled tests and simulations clarified the influence of layering on compressive behavior and suggested potential instability due to connection plate buckling.
