Abstract
Book design in modern Japan was developed with the introduction of the technique of type-printing at the beginning of the Meiji era. From that time on, with the advance of various forms of printing technology, book design gave rise to multifarious forms of design and inevitably introduced new techniques. Book design has thus become a full representative of graphic design. This study follows the history of techniques of book making from the modern period of Japan on. It is our first report of investigation into documentary records about the influence of printing techniques on book design.
