Warning indications on food packaging often appear in fine print on the back of the package along with the list of ingredients. These labels, though important, are extremely hard to read. Ever since the implementaion of the Japanese Products Liability Act, the use of pictograms on packages has increased. Most of these pictograms, however, are crowded with words, which makes them difficult to read. In this research, we propose designs that transmit, solely by means of pictograms, the warnings in a way understandable to anyone. Pictograms are approximately one square cm. In order to make the pictograms readable despite their small size, we used bold patterns and reversed black and white negative. We conducted questionnaire research with 78 persons, both male and female, between the ages of 12-54 regarding the readability of trial pictograms. Based on these results, we made adjustments and came up with the proposed pictograms.
