Abstract
peter behrens(1868-1940),german graphic artist,industrial designer and architect,was active in a broad range of applied arts in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.for two years,1901-02,when he was 33-34 years old,he designed women's clothing.this was only a small part of his career and less than commercially successful, yet it contributed to freer,more liberating styles at a time of growing health consciousness.the history of the movement and behrens's role in shaping its designs is explored.
