The purpose of this study is to consider the definition of Environmental Graphics. Environmental Graphics was two-dimensional graphic element applied to volumetric objects, such as the surface of architecture. They ultimately offer the inhabitant a sense of a large world beyond the visible space. Such effects were what distinguished Environmental Graphics from other graphics. The name, Environmental Graphics, was made late in the 1970s. But since antiquity, there were many examples of them. Man had employed graphics in ritual make-up that transforms the human body and the face in order to project a different image. Through this study, we could find a possibility of creating new Environment. Environmental Graphics have left much influence not only on the emotion of Man but also on our living space.

On the ground of the Philadelphia International Exhibition of 1876, two Japanese buildings were erected. They were the "Japanese Dwelling" and the "Japanese Bazaar" which were shown as Japanese exhibits, and were also utilized. One was used as a dwelling-house for Japanese workmen and the other as a building for the sale of Japanese wares. The materials for these buildings were brought from Japan and Japanese native workmen erected them. The process and way of coustruction appeared to the American people as very curious and interesting. Newspapers reports showed the construction before the opening of the Centennial Exhibition. In this report, three illustrated newspapers are presented to show American news reports of the Japanese buildings, and as an example of American viewpoints.

As the method of research, image words contributed to the attitude of liking the glasses design were calculated by multiply regression analysis, and cognitive parts affected to each image word of the glasses design were extracted by rough sets. Four image words "foppish (fashionable), pretty, decent, intellectual" in twelve contributed to liking were calculated using the data evaluated into five steps about each image word on the subject of twenty women. Next, the relationship between four images and cognitive parts was extracted based on the decision class using the data of each image word. From the result, the hierarchical relation from the attitude to cognitive parts about the preference has been clarified. Furthermore, the verification experiment of the result of the hierarchical relation was conducted on the subject of a designer working a design office, who proposed three design sketches with some useful comments to improve the method.

Blue base/Yellow base Color System is a theory of color harmony for practical use which was established by Robert Dorr born in New York City in 1905. In this system a color dictionary by Color Key Program is used as a scale. According to the theory all colors are classified into two groups, either blue base or yellow base. And colors that belong to the same group harmonize with each other while colors from different groups don't. In case of humans, regardless of race, they also can be classified into blue base or yellow base. In this paper, correlation between personal color and his/her favorite color is to be examined.

The effectiveness of analogized idea is clarified by researching the conception method in the conception of the design. In this research, the use of the analogy in the interface design was paid to attention. The effectiveness of the analogy in the web site design was verified by using analogized idea the web site project and to design the interface among the design processes on the Web site. The use of an analogy that as follows and was different was verified in the design process. [1]Use of analogy as conception technique of idea[2]Use of analogy in interface design plainlyIt can be said that the use of the analogy as the conception technique of the idea is useful for the intentional change of the designer of the cut of the conception. Moreover, "Begin" used for the screen interface on the other hand offers the user "Plainly intuitive". It can approach "Plainly" by taking man's common sense to the screen interface. When it is effective so that using analogized idea for the designer as a conception technique may conceive the shape of new information, it has understood.

The purpose of this learning is thinking about the function of the river for rich life environment formation and making the new proposal. We proposed the river aquarium for the community design as the result of this learning. The 21st century is called "the century of the environment". However, the technology of "architecture" sometimes destroys the natural environment. The architectural education may have the aim which is opposite to the environmental education. We groped for the education that it united them. The goal of this learning is to bring up the engineer who is responsible for the environment.

Signs with high necessity for foreigners had better be described in not only Japanese and English but also Chinese and Hangul. However in signs that are described in four languages, each character is small, and the readability of the whole declines extremely. Therefore, we experimented on the optimal number of languages in signs and the effectiveness of pictograms. As a result, after all, the readability of signs in two languages was significantly high for Japanese and English native speakers than that in four languages. And for Hangul native speakers, the readability did not decline in two languages, because English is effective for non-native speakers too. The effectiveness of pictograms, however, was not obvious in this experiment.

From the view point of universal design, a product and public sign should use colors which provide color distinguishability to some extent for all users of diverse color vision including color vision deficiencies and yellowing of a crystalline lens by age. At the same time, however, designers need to use colors which make a product or a public sign beautiful and aesthetic. In this research, we propose a systematic method of aiding designers to determine optimal n colors for a product and public sign which meet conditions both on color distinguishability for diverse users and on designer's aesthetic intentions. We confirmed the effectiveness of the proposed method by implementing it as a software, applying 13 colors representing 13 Tokyo subway lines in the route map, and obtaining the adjusted 13 colors of improved distinguishability for all of normal, protanope and deuteranope color vision.

It is considered urgent to ensure that sidewalk space be sequential; that comfortable activities be encouraged in concert with the composition of private lots; that there is a sufficient number of urban elements; and that urban environment morale be fostered. Public sidewalk space should be considered an area for"the cyclical momentum of actions and amenities",capitalizing on the"effectiveness of buffer zones". The "harmony based on an echelon between parts and the whole"is established, making the effects of details meaningful. The "relationship and continuity between elements" in turn enhance the effectiveness of sidewalk space that brings about comfort and amenities to streetscapes. We were able to show a structure of comfort and interrelation taking the shape of an upward spiral interconnecting humans, places and elements .

When there is no advertisement, it is "easy to find signs" and "worst atmosphere". When the positions of advertisements are separated from the signs, it made it easy to find the sign but doesn't improve the atmosphere. To lower a color chroma of the advertisement is the slightly effective to find the signs in the stations, but, it makes the atmosphere worse.

It is now the key issue how to make it easier for a user to understand and to access. In this research, I would like to illustrate how one comprehend / understnad things, which I believe that the basis for the "user-kind-ness". I found that "Understanding" was the key to acieve a task and it led one to realise the next possible step in design process.

This study discusses the structure of regional images of OGUNI Town and 11 other areas to create "community brand". The factor analyis was conducted in respect of the result of questionnaire survey regarding regional images. The analysis revealed that that the regional image is captured with three factors of the degree of culturedness, the degree of affinity, and the degree of quietness. When the regional images of 12 areas were compared, there were observed bias in evaluation of the four groups divided by gender and types of tourists, although some areas shared comparatively common and unique evaluations. Evaluation of OGUNI Town revealed biased values of four groups and no major feature was observed in the position of the factor space. It is recommended that the directivity of regional images is made clear and the design corresponding to that image be developed.

Based on the concept of person-to-person communication, we focused on the behavior of humans in a given space within a period of time (resting action) and correlated the resting action with space and urban elements in an attempt to establish a strategy for beneficial relationship between resting action and the items investigated in this study.A case study on the Minoshima Area in Fukuoka City was undertaken; conducting field studies, physical quantifications, questionnaires and behavioral observations. From the relationship between categorized space construction and urban-element distribution, a certain organized system was established. On further analysis of critical issues relevant to city construction, a strategic design for resolving plaguing issues in public space was proposed. By correlating action/behavior with space and urban elements in public space, the established relationships would facilitate a common image between the residents (or the space users) and the designers to eventually synchronize with the planning progress to realize said strategy.

As a result of the resrarch on the creative design thinking, it is shown ,as a whole, that forming a new concept at the level with high abstraction level is necessary in the creative thinking. In this research, the relation between image generation from abstract concept and a creative idea is verified by the experiment, in which a task to make new chair design from higher abstracted concept. As a result, the proposal of the thinking process to genearte more creative design are presented.

This study intends to investigate the design strategy of exterior space in apartment housing since 1990's in relation to demands of customers. For the study, a range of housing cases has been assessed from early 1990's to 2002 by reviewing past journals and new articles. The exterior space within all cases has been categorized and analysed within the framework not only of element classifications but also of conceptual divisions. The results of the study are follows; 1) in most cases, exterior space design considered to be a commercial advertisement in order to differentiate the housing as a good, 2) it necessarily leads to the fragmentary tendency in and planning and design process, 3) new design approaches in markets recently tends to adopt and develop to enforce an identity of site and community in exterior space design.

Public bath is the important place for people to clean up their body and communicate each other. In Edo Era water supply for public bath depended on river water or sea water. Normal water came to be used after the completion of modern water supply system in Meiji Period. Thus, the history of public bath in Japan is comparatively long. Analysis on the system and the design of public bath from UKIYOE and other documentation proved its typological development and its detail. Since after the Second World War people have frequented public bath far less than before due to the radical change of life style. This caused the decline of the number of public bathes in Tokyo.
