Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate the hazard perception level of eight safety colors designated by JIS Z9103 using Chinese students residing in Beijing and Nanjing as subjects. These eight colors consist of six safety colors: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and reddish purple; and two contrast colors: black and white. The perceived hazard levels of the eight colors were rated by 460 Chinese students using a Likert-type scale. The results revealed that the ratings of orange and yellow were not significantly different in Beijing and Nanjing. However, in Beijing, there was a remarkable difference between the with- and without-context conditions in the ratings of red and white. It is implied that the ratings of the students residing in Nanjing reflected Chinese characteristics to a greater extent than those residing in Beijing.
