Abstract
The purpose of this study is to improve spatial recognition at the railway stations. We use the users' cognitive maps for this purpose. As a result, those who answered our questionnaire were divided into seven groups. The 7% of them understood the station space well, and the 25% of them was not able to understand at all. A lot of people understood "passage" and "gate of Shinkansen". There were some people who understood "shop area". Therefore, we proposed that those which user enumerated in the cognitive map, such as "passage", "gate of Shinkansen" and "shop area", should be distinguished clearly from another facilities in premises maps. In addition, it was proposed that those which user enumerated should be described as landmarks on premises maps, such as "ticket offices", "names of the department store" and "name of the shop" etc.
