Abstract
This study examined the style and transitions of the Kakesuzuri by focusing on artifacts made between early and mid Edo period. Results indicated that the distinct characteristic was found on the design of the metal belt fitting at the center of the door. The Kakesuzuri in the capital before 1640 had a ‘I’ shape pattern situated the top and bottom of the vertical metal belt fitting while around 1640, those in Osaka had a cross shape pattern. The top and bottom of the vertical metal belt fitting was transformed into gourd shaped cross pattern by people in Osaka. In addition, the pattern or similar pattern on the hinges was carved on the metal belt fittings as a form of trade name after 1660.
