Abstract
We report on a project to create an active movement in the Hakodate community integrating design practice, design research and design learning. From our previous projects, we found that it is more effective to approach a design task by focusing gradually on the core issues based on shared experiences from different perspectives, than to finding a goal and trying to get there quickly. A student’s visualization of design process revealed that learning standard design methods was not enough to create a meaningful proposal. We propose “Designing Voyage” method for constructing a convivial society in which people with different perspectives travel around the community together and collaborate to create a meaningful design while enjoying shared experiences. We illustrate this method with some fieldworks and discuss how such a process can be embedded in the community.
