Abstract
The aim of this study is to examine the history of tourism development and clarify the role of print media in Karatsu during the Meiji and Taisho periods. During the Taisho period, Karatsu developed rapidly as a resort following the building of a railway connecting Karatsu and Fukuoka. The railway company played a major role in this development, particularly through the accurate representation of Karatsu’s tourism policy in its print media.
