Abstract
The traditional craft industry in Japan has declined in recent decades due to the aging of craftsmen, a shortage of successors, and lifestyle and market changes. On the other hand, the precise finish of Japanese traditional crafts are being reevaluated. Contemporary consumers have highly evaluated products manufactured in collaboration with designers. Currently, crafts and design education at universities are independent. They are offered as different courses or even different departments. Consequently, the relationship between artisanal craft education and design education at universities must be assessed to develop future education methods. In this research, I consider the education of both by comparing students’ graduation works.
