Abstract

We focused on the Japanese covers of Harper's BAZAAR, VOGUE, marie claire, and ELLE, and conducted a survey to find out what kind of message the covers convey. The purpose of the entire research is to clarify the creator's and reader's thoughts on the cover, and the purpose of this paper is to clarify the creator's thoughts on the cover.

As a result of conducting semi-structured interviews with creators who have been involved in creating the covers of the four magazines mentioned above, we found that what the creators think is necessary for a cover is to convey the social message of the time, and to express that. In order to do so, the power of “creativity” is important, and the ability of readers to interpret the message is also required.
